How to choose the right monitor
A good monitor makes every working day easier on the eyes and lets you fit more on screen. The right choice depends on what you do all day, how much desk space you have and what your computer can connect to.
Size and resolution
21.5" to 24" Full HD (1920×1080) monitors suit general office work and are the most affordable. 27" works best at QHD (2560×1440) or 4K, where text stays sharp at the larger size. Larger screens at only Full HD look noticeably softer, so match resolution to size.
Panel type: IPS, VA or TN
IPS panels give the best colours and viewing angles and are the usual choice for office, design and photo work. VA panels offer deeper contrast and suit movies and mixed use. TN panels are fast and cheap but have weaker colour and narrow viewing angles.
Refresh rate and response time
Standard office monitors run at 60 to 75Hz. For gaming, 120Hz, 144Hz or higher gives smoother motion, provided your graphics card can drive it. For ordinary work, a higher refresh rate adds cost without much benefit.
Connections and stands
Check that the monitor has the port your computer uses: HDMI, DisplayPort or USB-C. A USB-C monitor with power delivery can charge a laptop and show the screen over a single cable. A height-adjustable stand, or a VESA mount, helps posture on long days.

- A 24" Full HD monitor is a good all-round choice. If you work with several windows or spreadsheets, a 27" QHD monitor gives more room.
- Can I connect a monitor to my laptop?
- Yes. Most laptops have HDMI, USB-C or DisplayPort. Check which video output your laptop has, then match it to the monitor input.
- Do I need a 4K monitor?
- Not for most office use. 4K helps with photo and video editing and with large screens, but it needs a computer that can drive it.
