How to choose ink and toner

Getting the right cartridge is mostly a matter of matching your printer model and choosing between original and compatible supplies. These notes help you buy the correct one and keep your running costs down.

Match the cartridge number

Printers use specific cartridge numbers (for example "HP 305" or "Brother TN-2310"). The number is on your old cartridge and in the printer manual. A cartridge for a different model of the same brand may not fit, so check compatibility before ordering.

Ink or toner

Inkjet printers use liquid ink and suit occasional printing and photos. Laser printers use toner powder, which does not dry out, lasts longer between replacements and costs less per page for regular document printing.

Original, compatible and high-yield

Original cartridges give consistent results and full manufacturer support. Compatible cartridges cost less and can be a good option for everyday documents. High-yield (XL) cartridges print more pages and normally cost less per page than standard sizes.

Make cartridges last

Print at least occasionally, because unused inkjet cartridges can dry out. Store spare cartridges flat or upright in a cool place, and use draft mode for internal documents.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the right cartridge for my printer?
Use the cartridge number on your old cartridge, or your printer model number. Send us the model and we will confirm the correct supplies.
Will compatible cartridges damage my printer?
Good-quality compatible cartridges work normally in most printers. Some printers show a warning message when a non-original cartridge is fitted.
Why is my printer not recognising the new cartridge?
Remove it and refit it, check that the protective tape is removed, and clean the contacts. A cartridge chip that is not compatible with your firmware can also cause this.
Do you also sell printers?
Yes. See our printers page for current stock.
