How to choose an SSD or storage drive
Replacing an old hard drive with an SSD is one of the best upgrades for a slow laptop or desktop, and additional storage gives you room for files and backups. Here is how to pick the right drive.
Check what your computer takes
Laptops and desktops use different drive formats. 2.5" SATA SSDs fit older laptops and desktops. M.2 SATA and M.2 NVMe drives are small, gumstick-shaped drives found in newer machines. NVMe is the fastest, but your motherboard must support it. Check your model before buying.
Capacity
256GB is a minimum for Windows and basic apps. 512GB suits most users, and 1TB or more is better for photos, video and large software. Leave some free space, because drives perform best when they are not full.
Speed and endurance
A SATA SSD is many times faster than a hard drive. NVMe drives are faster again, but for everyday use you will notice the jump from a hard drive far more than the step from SATA to NVMe.
Moving to the new drive
You can clone the old drive to the new one, or install Windows fresh. Our technicians in Pretoria can fit an SSD and move your data if you prefer not to do it yourself.
Frequently asked questions
- Will an SSD make my old laptop faster?
- Usually, yes. Start-up, program loading and general responsiveness all improve noticeably compared to a mechanical hard drive.
- What is the difference between SATA and NVMe?
- NVMe drives connect directly over PCIe and are faster, but they need an M.2 slot that supports NVMe. SATA SSDs work in older machines.
- How do I know which SSD fits my laptop?
- Send us the model number and we will tell you which type your machine takes.
- Can you fit it and move my data?
- Yes. Our repair team can fit the drive and transfer your data or reinstall Windows.
