How to choose an inverter

An inverter converts battery power into mains power, so lights, routers, computers and TVs keep working when the grid goes down. The right system depends on what you want to run and for how long.

Calculate your load

List the devices you want to run and add up their wattage. Choose an inverter rated above that total, with some room to spare for start-up surges. Fridges and pumps use more power when they start than when they run.

Batteries and runtime

The battery bank decides how long you can run. Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries last longer, take deeper discharges and are lighter than lead-acid, but cost more. Runtime is roughly battery capacity (in watt-hours) divided by the load in watts.

Pure sine wave

A pure sine wave inverter gives clean power that suits computers, TVs and other sensitive electronics. Modified sine wave units are cheaper but can cause buzzing or problems with some devices.

Adding solar

Many inverters are hybrid and accept solar panels to recharge the batteries during the day. If you plan to add solar later, choose an inverter that supports it.

Frequently asked questions

What can I run on an inverter?
Lights, routers, computers, TVs and small appliances work on most inverters. Geysers, stoves and heaters need a very large system, and are usually left off.
How big an inverter do I need?
Add up the devices you want to run, then pick an inverter rated above that total. For a router, lights and a laptop, a small inverter is enough.
Can I connect solar panels?
Hybrid inverters accept solar panels. Check the model before you buy.
Does an inverter replace a UPS?
For longer outages, yes, though a UPS is still handy for protecting a single computer or network device.
